Wicked at the West End
Dubbed the ‘Best Musical of the Decade’, this spectacular show is full of characters to win your heart. Wicked is the ‘story before the story’ of the Wizard of Oz, and charts the turbulent history of the two witches who we know best as Glinda The Good and The Wicked Witch of the West.
We follow the two characters through their first encounter at school as an unlikely friendship grows and changes, through power struggles and romances.
The story is based on a novel by Gregory Maguire, written in 1995, where he sought to tell the other side of the famous Oz epic.
The show has won multiple awards for both cast members and the production – it holds the title currently for longest running West End show in history at 17th position, as it enters its 10th year.
Elphaba is the green witch we come to know as The Wicked Witch of the West. She is currently played by award winning actress Willemijn Verkaik. She has performed the show in three languages, won three major awards and spectacularly performed the shows pinnacle song Gravity at the 2014 Olivier Awards in Covent Garden.
Glinda, the blonde bubbly witch striving for popularity, is played by Suzie Mathers. She has also played this role for Australian and Asian tours of the show, as well as playing other iconic characters in shows such as Mamma Mia and Cinderella.
Returning for Wicked’s tenth year in the West End, she brings her international performance of this character to London.
Wicked has recently announced an extension at London’s Apollo theatre until May 2018, as it continues to draw crowds in, performance after performance.
The show is also proud to support charities through the programme dubbed ‘For Good’. Charities such as the Woodland Trust and ABA (Anti-Bullying Alliance) are helped greatly by the show’s proceeds.
